Decks require strong columns for support. These columns carry the entire weight of the decks. Thus, they are the foundation of a deck or a porch. Column is basically a structure designed to support beams, arches or the upper part of a building. A shallow column projecting from a wall is called Pilaster. This kind of column is basically designed to give the appearance of a supporting column but is essentially decorative in function.

Conventionally, columns were made of stone or concrete which made them quite heavy and difficult to work with. Today, while some columns are still made from the traditional materials, columns are also made from a wide range of unconventional materials including wood, metal, fiberglass, even plastic or Poly vinyl Chloride (PVC). The new materials can be manufactured to provide the look of traditional stone so traditional elegance is not lost, or they can be used in modern designs providing their own beauty to the design.

Wood columns are preferred by many home owners. Wood columns are sturdy and offer good support to the decks. Treated wood must be used for making deck columns which makes them last long and are extremely durable. Like the wooden decks themselves, wood deck columns too can be made of different kinds of wood. Wood columns can be made of various types of wood like Southern Yellow Pine, Douglas Fir Larch, Hem Fir, Western Red Cedar, Ipe and Redwood. In very dry areas wood without treatment can be used for making wood columns. However, it is always recommended to use pressure or preservative treated wood for making wood columns as a safety measure. There can be some amount of ground moisture which can degrade the wood columns. Preservative treated wood can be perfect protection against this.
